Do You Need an AED?
While not every Australian workplace is legally required to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), all employers have a duty to provide a safe workplace under Work Health and Safety (WHS) or Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation.
South Australia is currently the only state with specific AED legislation. From 1 January 2026, the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022 requires commercial buildings over 600 m² to have a publicly accessible AED.
An AED is widely recognised as an important part of workplace first aid, particularly where there is a risk of cardiac arrest or delayed emergency response.
Early defibrillation, combined with CPR, can significantly improve survival following a sudden cardiac arrest.
At Statewide Compliance Testing, we provide workplace AED assessments, supply, professional installation, ongoing servicing, and compliance support to help keep your workplace prepared and compliant.
Did You Know?
The portable defibrillator was invented in Belfast, Northern Ireland, by physician Frank Pantridge in the mid-1960s, while the first automatic public-use AED ("Heart-Aid") was developed in the United States in the late 1970s
