Test & Tag Frequencies

How Often Should Electrical Equipment Be Tested?

The required test and tag frequency for electrical equipment depends primarily on the environment in which the equipment is used.

AS/NZS 3760 provides minimum inspection and testing intervals based on the level of risk associated with different environments. These intervals should be considered the minimum requirements. Businesses may choose to test more frequently as part of their own risk management, workplace safety and OHS procedures.

Recommended Testing Frequencies

Testing Frequency            Typical Environment

3 Months                           Construction, demolition and building sites – Harsh environments
where equipment is more likely to be damaged, exposed to                                                         moisture, dust, impact or rough handling.

6 Months                           Factories, warehouses and production environments – Equipment                                               is often used frequently or continuously, increasing the likelihood                                               of wear, damage or deterioration.

12 Months                         Hostile environments – Equipment or supply cords are prone to

flexing, movement, abuse or general deterioration. This may                                                       include equipment exposed to dust, weather or heavy use.

5 Years                               Non-hostile environments – Equipment is not normally exposed to
flexing, abuse or harsh conditions. A typical example may be
equipment located in an office or server room.

Your Workplace May Require More Frequent Testing

The recommended intervals above are a guide based on the environment and level of risk. Your business may require more frequent testing depending on how equipment is used, its condition, accessibility, operating conditions and your workplace risk assessment.

Some workplaces and industries may also have additional requirements, procedures or colour-coding systems that need to be followed.

Not sure how often your equipment should be tested?
Statewide Compliance Testing can help determine an appropriate testing frequency for your workplace and provide ongoing test and tag services to help keep your electrical equipment compliant and safe.

Important

Test and tag intervals should always be assessed in accordance with the applicable requirements of AS/NZS 3760, workplace risk assessments and any additional industry or site-specific requirements.
